FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need my own instrument and tsume?

You are not required to buy your own instrument, because it can be really expensive! Kitai-sensei has several koto available for practice. As for tsume, first timers and beginner learners may use Kitai-sensei's secondhand tsume! However, as the number of secondhand tsume is limited and they may not fit your fingers very well, everyone who would like to join us long term is encouraged to get their very own set. Each set costs about $65 in total, and can be bought from Kitai-sensei.

2. Is NUS KotoKottoN a high commitment CCA?

As with any music instrument, all of us at KotoKottoN hope that interested parties can commit to the practice hours, and come for classes weekly. While we are a beginner friendly CCA, frequent practice is the only way to improve and hone your skill in playing the koto. Further, as the koto is meant to be played in an ensemble, frequent practice is required to play well and in sync together with other musicians. If there is any difficulty in finding time to come down for practice, please do not be afraid to discuss with Kitai-sensei or any of the seniors!

3. Are there many performances? Do I have to perform?

The ensemble has several ad-hoc performances throughout the year, with guaranteed yearly performances like the NUS Japanese Cultural Festival. We hope that our members will not be afraid to perform as it is a good gauge of your skill-level and helps to build stage confidence. Also, performing songs that you love with friends will always be a fun activity!

4. Are there practices during exams/holidays?

Regular semester practices will halt during reading week and exam weeks. Holiday practices usually resume the week after all NUS examinations end. All holiday practice dates/times will be confirmed via our telegram group as well as on this website, as the day and time usually differs from that of the regular semester practices. During the holidays, members can also come back on non-practice days for self-practice. Please do let Kitai-sensei know in advance!

5. Do I get CCA points out of this?

This is quite dependent on individual events that we perform for. We can't guarantee that you'll get points, but we hope that you'll be interested in our ensemble for more than just the points!

6. I don't have any music background! Will it be hard to pick up?

While having any form of music background certainly helps, do not worry about not having any background either! All relevant music theory will be taught when you join, and the music instrument itself is not difficult to pick up!

7. I am not an NUS student. Am I allowed to join?

Yes! We welcome members of the public and non-NUS students as long as you are serious about learning the koto. Do fill in the form on our contact or email us and we'll get back to you!
